Manufacturing expanded in January

Manufacturing expanded in January, as the ISM purchasing manager index registered 56.6 percent, an increase of 2.3 percentage points from the December reading of 54.3 percent.

“This indicates growth in manufacturing for the 29th consecutive month. The PMI reversed a December decline in expansion primarily through gains in New Orders and Production,” said Timothy R. Fiore, CPSM, chair of the Institute for Supply Management Manufacturing Business Survey Committee.

A reading above 50 percent indicates that the manufacturing economy is generally expanding; below 50 percent indicates that it is generally contracting.
