Durable goods orders up in January
New orders for manufactured durable goods in January increased $5.2 billion or 3.0 percent to $175.7 billion, the U.S. Census Bureau announced today.
This was the second consecutive monthly increase and followed a 1.9 percent December increase. Excluding transportation, new orders decreased 0.6 percent. Excluding defense, new orders increased 1.6 percent. The larger than expected increase is a further indication that manufacturing is powering the U.S. economic recovery.
Transportation equipment, up four of the last five months, had the largest increase, $6.0 billion or 15.6 percent to $44.8 billion. This was led by nondefense aircraft and parts, which increased $4.0 billion.
Shipments of manufactured durable goods decreased $0.3 billion or 0.2 percent to $180.7 billion.This followed a 2.4 percent December increase. Transportation equipment, down following two consecutive monthly increases, had the largest decrease, $1.6 billion or 3.5 percent to $44.6 billion.
