Leon Frey dies at 79
Leon H. Frey, former president of Champion Cutting Tool, died on July 8. He was 79.
Frey resided in Delray, Florida, and was well known throughout the cutting tools industry. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Vivian, and son Lowell.
Frey was born in Bronx, New York, and attended Columbia University. He joined Champion Cutting Tools in the 1960s, and is credited with developing the Brute XL5 twist drill, a heavy-duty jobber drill for fast drilling and long life in stainless steel.
Champion has served professionals with industrial grade products and services since 1897. During WWII, the company supplied the U.S. military. After the war, Champion added numerous products and expanded its territories westward.
Frey was president of the company from 1964 through 2005. "Widely recognized for his intelligence and wit, Leon contributed to the community in many ways, and served as a trustee on the board of South Nassau Communities Hospital," according to a company statement.
