Housing starts fall again
Privately-owned housing starts fell 5% in June to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 549,000.
The U.S. Census Bureau and the Department of Housing and Urban Development said the latest figure was 5.8% below the June 2009 rate of 583,000.
On a positive note, permits for privately-owned housing units climbed 2.1% to 586,000. The June rate is 2.3% below the June 2009 estimate of 600,000.
Single-family authorizations in June were at a rate of 421,000, 3.4% below the revised May figure of 436,000.
