ISM survey: Manufacturing contracted in July
Economic activity in the manufacturing sector contracted in July for the second time since July 2009.
According to the latest Manufacturing ISM Report On Business, the PMI registered 49.8 percent, an increase of 0.1 percentage point when compared to June's reading of 49.7 percent. A reading above 50 percent indicates that the manufacturing economy is generally expanding; below 50 percent indicates that it is generally contracting..
The New Orders Index registered 48 percent, an increase of 0.2 percentage point from June and indicating contraction in new orders for the second consecutive month, but at a slightly slower rate.
