Manufacturing slowed in November

Economic activity in the manufacturing sector contracted in November following two months of modest expansion.

According to the latest Manufacturing ISM Report On Business, the PMI registered 49.5 percent, a decrease of 2.2 percentage points when compared to October's reading of 51.7 percent. This is the fourth month in the last six months that the PMI has contracted, and the index is at its lowest level since July 2009 when the PMI registered 49.2 percent. A reading above 50 percent indicates that the manufacturing economy is generally expanding; below 50 percent indicates that it is generally contracting.
