Searching for oldest pair of Klein side-cutting pliers
Klein Tools is searching for the world’s oldest pair of Klein Side-Cutting Pliers.
Customers can see if their pliers are eligible by determining if their tool is the standard side-cutting type, bears the original Klein trademark and has ‘code markings’ that will be found inside the handle. Photos of the pliers and completed form may be mailed or uploaded to Klein’s website. For specifications/details, please visit www.kleintools.com/oldestpliers.
The winning pliers will be selected by Klein Tools’ engineering team based on above requirements. The tool owner will receive $2,500 in cash and approximately $2,500 in new Klein Tools. All photo entries must be uploaded to Klein's website or mailed and postmarked by May 31, 2013.
Klein Tools was founded in 1857 by an industrious German immigrant, Mathias Klein, who began in the hand tool business when a broken side-cutting pliers was brought to his forge shop by a telegraph lineman. Mathias repaired the pliers by forging and finishing a new half for the tool and riveting it to the old half. Soon the lineman returned because the original half of the plier had broken and needed replacement. Mathias forged and finished the second half of the pliers and riveted it to the other replacement half -- thus creating the first complete Klein pliers.
“Klein tools are known for their quality and durability,” says Channel Sales Manager Thomas Barton. “Our customers are very loyal and some have tools that have been handed down from one generation to another. So, we thought it would be interesting to see exactly how long our pliers soldier on.”
