National Robotics League: Impacting Manufacturing, National defense, and the Future of the U.S. Economy

Steven Tamasi Maureen Carruthers

On today’s show we speak with two individuals who have their hands all over one our favorite topics. We had the pleasure of sitting down with Steven Tamasi and Maureen Carruthers and gaining an inside view of the National Robotics League (NRL).

Steven Tamasi is CEO of Boston Centerless, located in Woburn, Mass. He is a second-generation entrepreneur with a passion for business who understands the power of operational excellence. Managing a culture shift to lean manufacturing has resulted in a world class manufacturing operation and led to winning the 2006 Northeast Shingo Prize Silver Medal.

Maureen Carruthers brings over 10 years nonprofit experience to her role as Program Director of the National Robotics League (NRL), a program of the National Tooling and MachiningAssociation (NTMA). As a relative newcomer to the manufacturing industry, Maureen’s “outsider” perspective helps her shape the messaging and programing of the NRL to attract students and parents who might not otherwise consider manufacturing a viable career option.

Key discussion topics from today’s show:

  • What is the National Robotics League and why is it necessary?
  • How is the NRL organized?
  • Why is the work of the NRL important to the future of manufacturing, and the economy, and America’s defense?
  • Why the focus on STEM matters.
  • How can schools and local manufacturers get involved?
