Fourth-quarter productivity increased

Manufacturing sector productivity increased 1.3 percent in the fourth quarter of 2013, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today.


Output increased 5.0 percent and hours worked increased 3.6 percent.

Productivity increased 3.0 percent in the durable goods sector and decreased 0.1 percent in the nondurable goods sector. Over the last four quarters, manufacturing productivity increased 1.9 percent, as output increased 3.0 percent and hours increased 1.1 percent.

Unit labor costs in manufacturing decreased 0.1 percent in the fourth quarter of 2013 and declined 1.0 percent from the same quarter a year ago. 

Nonfarm business sector labor productivity increased at a 1.8 percent annual rate during the fourth quarter of 2013.
