ISA releases market report

The Industrial Supply Association has released the 2013 North American Industrial Markets Report.

The comprehensive report provides detailed market size and segmentation data for 14 industrial product classes representative of ISA member markets. This is the sixth edition of the report, which includes market size estimates for the United States, Canada and Mexico.

This unique collection of data is designed to give ISA manufacturers and distributors a clearer picture of their existing markets, market potential and benchmarks for establishing sales and growth goals.

The North American market size in 2012 for the combined 14 industrial product classes analyzed in the report is estimated at $187.4 billion, which includes the United States, Canada and Mexico. The U.S. market is estimated at $152.9 billion, Canada at $17.1 billion, and Mexico at $17.4 billion. There is additional geographic segmentation by U.S. state, metropolitan statistical area and county, as well as Canadian province. The report provides customer segment detail for each of the 14 product classes for the major industry classifications, including mining, construction and manufacturing segments.

Overall, 2010 and 2011 were years of moderate to strong growth in industrial products markets, following the low point of 2009. Key sectors – including automotive, energy and construction – helped make 2012 a year of continued growth for many ISA members. But the year was characterized by a second-half slowdown in manufacturing, resulting in slower growth overall in 2012.

The 14 industrial product classes included in this report are defined by aggregating more than 60 individual maintenance, repair, operating and production (MROP) industrial product categories typically sold by industrial supply distributors. The ISA product classes include abrasives, chemicals, cutting tools, fasteners, fluid power, hand tools, janitorial supplies, machine tool accessories, power tools, power transmission, rubber products, safety, saws and welding equipment. The report provides a complete definition of each product class.

The data in this report is presented in an online user-friendly format to give top-level estimates of market size, market share and market definition based on 14 product groups selected as representative of those sold by many ISA members.
Deeper-level industrial product analysis at the county and metropolitan statistical area (MSA) levels is available to ISA members in spreadsheet format for import, finer analysis and internal planning use. This includes data for 14 industrial product groups for 369 MSAs and 400 U.S. counties.
