Construction and manufacturing job gains

Construction employment grew by 32,000 jobs in April while factory employment increased by 12,000 during the month, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today.


The biggest construction industry job growth gains were in heavy and civil engineering construction (+11,000) and residential building (+7,000). the industry has added 189,000 jobs over the past year, with almost three-fourths of the gain occurring in the past 6 months.

The manufacturing industry gained 12,000 jobs during the month, with most of the gains in the durable goods sector.

Mining added 10,000 jobs in April, with most of the gain in support activities for mining (+7,000).

Overall employment rose by 288,000 in April, and the unemployment rate fell by 0.4 percentage point to 6.3 percent.
