Construction and manufacturing job gains in May

Construction employment continued to trend up over the month, gaining 17,000 jobs in May, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today.


Employment in the construction industry has increased by 273,000 over the past year.

Factory employment increased by 7,000 jobs during the month, with most of the gains from companies that manufacture motor vehicles and parts. 

In May, employment continued on an upward trend in transportation and warehousing (+13,000). Truck transportation added 9,000 jobs over the month.

Total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 280,000 in May, and the unemployment rate was essentially unchanged at 5.5 percent.
