Manufacturing and construction job growth

The monthly jobs figures from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics showed small gains in manufacturing and construction during the month of May.


Durable goods manufacturers added 17,000 jobs during the month, but nondurable goods manufacturers cut 7,000 jobs, for a net gain of 10,000 manufacturing jobs.

Manufacturing has added 105,000 jobs over the past year. 

Employment in other major industries, including mining and logging (+2,000 jobs), construction (+6,000) and wholesale trade (+9,900) showed small gains during the month.

Total nonfarm payroll employment rose by 217,000 in May, and the unemployment rate remained at 6.3 percent.
