December inventories up marginally from November
The U.S. Census Bureau reports December 2023 end-of-month inventories were $803.3 billion, up 0.8% (+/- 0.2%) from last month.
Advance International Trade in Goods
The international trade deficit was $88.5 billion in December, down $0.9 billion from $89.3 billion in November. Exports of goods for December were $169.8 billion, $4.1 billion more than November exports. Imports of goods for December were $258.3 billion, $3.2 billion more than November imports.
Advance Wholesale Inventories
Wholesale inventories for December, adjusted for seasonal variations and trading day differences, but not for price changes, were estimated at an end-of-month level of $897.7 billion, up 0.4% (±0.4%)* from November 2023, and were down 2.7% (±1.1%) from December 2022. The October 2023 to November 2023 percentage change was revised from down 0.2% (±0.4%)* to down 0.4 percent (±0.4 percent)*.
Advance Retail Inventories
Retail inventories for December, adjusted for seasonal variations and trading day differences, but not for price changes, were estimated at an end-of-month level of $803.3 billion, up 0.8% (±0.2%) from November 2023, and were up 5.3% (±0.7%) from December 2022. The October 2023 to November 2023 percentage change was revised from down 0.1% (±0.2%)* to up 0.1% (±0.2%)*.
