Hi-vis work wear minus HFCs, PFAS
Reflective Apparel, a manufacturer of a complete line of high-visibility apparel, has eliminated hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), fluorine, and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), also known as “forever chemicals,” from its water-resistant and waterproof high visibility garments.
All stock manufactured in 2023 and beyond is made with a C0 hydrofluorocarbon-free, fluorine- free and PFAS-free DWR finish. Fluorine-free C0 DWR fabrics offer significant environmental and health benefits compared to C6 and C8 water repellent fabrics, which are made with PFAS. Unlike PFAS-based repellents, which persist in the environment and can accumulate in human and animal tissues, potentially leading to adverse health effects, C0 DWR technologies use alternative chemistries that break down more easily and do not bioaccumulate. This makes C0 DWR fabrics a safer choice for both consumers and the planet.
These DWR advancements address growing environmental regulations and increasing consumer demand for more sustainable and non-toxic textile solutions. Additionally, C0 DWR treatments still provide effective water repellency, ensuring functional performance in outdoor workwear and reflective apparel without the environmental and health risks associated with PFAS chemicals.
“Water-repellent and waterproof fabrics are critical for workers in many different industries, including first responders, construction workers, and oil and gas workers, among others. These workers rely on the effectiveness of these garments to stay safe and to be able to perform their job duties. Our goal is to offer the highest quality products on the market that are also safe for people and safe for the environment,” said Scott A. Corrao, president of Reflective Apparel.
C0 fluorine-free DWR finishes not only protect against water penetration, but also improve color fastness, dust resistance, and stain resistance. Screen printing is also more durable on C0 fluorine-free DWR finishes when compared to screen printing on untreated fabrics.
In addition to water-repellent and waterproof high-visibility garments, Reflective Apparel offers a complete line of ANSI-certified hi-vis apparel. The vast inventory of hi-vis products are kept in stock in sizes XS to 8XL Tall. Reflective Apparel has also recently introduced a line of flame- resistant hi-vis apparel called RAflectFR.
“We will continue to adopt the newest technological advancements in textile development as they become available with the safety and well-being of people and the environment as our top priority,” said Corrao.
