A new benchmark in indexable steel milling

Sandvik Coromant recently announced the launch of GC1230, a new grade for indexable milling. Designed for high metal removal rates in stable conditions, GC1230 is the go-to solution for steel milling.

Sandvik Coromont steel milling grade GC1230The new steel milling grade GC1230, produced with Zertivo coating process technology, excels in both edge line toughness and wear resistance. “GC1230 has a groundbreaking coating innovation, delivering exceptional performance with security, predictability and sustainability. It is the first choice for steel milling applications,” said Wayne Mayson, global product application manager for grades at Sandvik Coromant.

“This new steel milling physical vapor deposition (PVD) grade innovation is comprised of a nano multilayer TiAlN and TiSiN coating with improved adhesion — a coating technology that is improved in all directions of performance capability,” continued Mayson. “In short, it is stronger for longer, whether used in wet or dry steel milling applications.”

GC1230 can extend tool life, boost productivity and provide a more sustainable milling approach. The new coating of GC1230 provides edge line toughness, resulting in significantly extended tool life, which means more pieces per edge. Thanks to the high heat resistance capabilities, shops can maximize cutting speed to achieve high metal removal rates and boost productivity by reducing machining and cycle time. Its performance in dry machining conditions makes it a sustainable alternative to coolant-based methods, contributing to more eco-friendly milling.

Comprehensive tests conducted between the existing grade GC1130 and the new grade GC1230 demonstrate the latter’s superior strengths and versatility — it is strong all over. The new grade builds upon the success of grade GC1130 but has a wider application coverage, due to increased toughness and wear resistance capabilities at even higher cutting data. The edge line security of GC1230 stands out, but heat resistance, crater and wear resistance, and tool life in both P1 and P2 material are also far superior to its predecessor.

Optimized for light roughing to finishing operations, GC1230 is ideal for a wide range of applications, from general to more challenging tasks such as square shoulder milling, complex tool paths and deep cavities, in both wet and dry conditions. It is suitable for all industry segments and various component features.
