UNK student wins ISA scholarship

The Industrial Supply Association (ISA) announced today that University of Nebraska at Kearney student Rustin Dring was chosen to receive the 2011-12 Gary L. Buffington Memorial Scholarship.

Rustin Dring"Rustin has many qualities which set him apart from his peers at UNK. He exemplifies all of the criteria for this prestigious award including high educational performance, leadership and community service," said Scott Jochum, faculty member at UNK and director of Student and Industry Relations for the Industrial Distribution Program.

In addition to serving as president of the school's Industrial Distribution Organization (IDO), which is the largest student organization on the UNK campus, Rustin is a three-year starting running back and captain of the UNK football team. He achieved all conference and all region academic status, first team all conference and all regional athletic status, and was named the Offensive Player of the Year in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.

"Working daily with Rustin as the IDO sponsor, I have witnessed firsthand his motivation and commitment to the student organization and the many hours he dedicates to the organization's success," said Jochum. Rustin joined the IDO program as a freshman and has recruited 14 new majors to the ID program. He was named IDO Recruiter of the Year for two consecutive years.

He is a member of Phi Eta Sigma, the National Honor Society for college students, and Epsilon Pi Tau, an elite group of students who have achieved excellence in academic endeavors, representing the College of Business and Technology. He also actively participates in the Kearney community by volunteering in the Big Brothers program, coaching little league football and as a member of Loper Mates, a mentoring program to Kearney youth.

"Rustin has an engaging personality that enables him to break down barriers and develop dialog with individuals from all corners of our campus," said Darrell Morris, UNK head football coach. "Rustin is a prime example of the mission statement of small college athletics, 'developing better students through the experience of intercollegiate athletics.'"
