June US cutting tool shipments up 31.7% year over year

Shipments of cutting tools totaled $270.5 million in June, a 12.8% increase over May and 31.7% greater than June 2025, according to the latest Cutting Tool Market Report from AMT – The Association For Manufacturing Technology and the U.S. Cutting Tool Institute (USCTI).

Year-to-date shipments totaled $1.47 billion, up 19.3% from the same period in 2025. Units shipped increased moderately following a decline in May. Although dollar sales were strong, this was only the third-highest month for units shipped in 2026.

“Through the first six months of 2026, our industry experienced significant double-digit growth,” said Mike Stokey, president of USCTI and executive vice president and owner of cutting tool manufacturer Allied Machine & Engineering. “As I stated in my last update, much of this growth is due to raw material prices skyrocketing, which has caused inflation. The leadership team of USCTI has been active in Washington, D.C., and our diligence appears to be having an impact. The Department of Commerce’s Bureau of Industry and Security has made a ruling that should help with our supply of tungsten carbide. The outlook for the remainder of 2026 remains cautiously optimistic.”

Bret Tayne, president of Everede Tool Company, a cutting tool manufacturer, said, “Monthly year-over-year and year-to-date sales continued to increase at a double-digit clip through June. The question is how much of these increases can be attributed to price increases driven by rapidly escalating raw material prices, and how much are due to unit volume increases? Fortunately, raw material prices appear to have leveled off in recent weeks, and the cutting tool industry remains poised for growth over the next 10 to 12 months.”
