Utilization rates dip slightly as recent machine orders hit shop floors: AMT
Total U.S. industrial production was flat in August 2026, and the index for manufacturing decreased by 0.3 percentage points. Capacity utilization among manufacturers also decreased slightly.
“A late summer pullback in production is not unexpected, and the volume of machinery purchases recorded in the last five months would naturally reduce capacity utilization slightly until the new capacity is put to use,” said Christopher Chidzik, principal economist of AMT – The Association For Manufacturing Technology.
“As manufacturers convene[d] at IMTS 2026 to invest in additional machinery, we can expect capacity utilization to dip a bit further as machines hit shop floors, but production should increase as American manufacturers utilize those technologies to help meet the market’s growing demands on them.”
