Atlas Tube to host webinar discussing Cheyenne Mountain Zoo’s giraffe barn

Atlas Tube, a Zekelman company, will host a webinar on Tuesday, October 27, 11 a.m. to Noon Central, exploring how hollow structural sections (HSS) helped bring the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo’s giraffe barn to life.

Atlas Tube_Cheyenne Mountain Zoo’s giraffe barn “Reaching New Heights with HSS | Cheyenne Mountain Zoo Giraffe Barn” will feature a project-team discussion of the design, fabrication, and construction decisions behind the Colorado Springs facility. Attendees can earn Professional Development Hour (PDH) credit, which may count toward continuing education requirements for professional engineering licensure.

The session will examine how the team balanced structural performance, architectural vision, animal welfare, and construction demands on a challenging mountainside project site. The team offers insights for anyone who encounters steel as part of their work. Architects can explore how curved HSS supported an open, light-filled habitat while preserving the project’s distinctive form. Civil and structural engineers can learn about load paths, material selection and construction considerations. Professors and students can connect classroom concepts with a real-world example of collaboration among designers, engineers and fabricators.

“We wanted a structure that was not just iconic, but one that truly promoted the well-being of the animals. HSS gave us both—elegance and peace of mind for animal safety,” said Gregory Friesen, owner at CSNA Architects Colorado Springs.

During the webinar, the project team will discuss:

  • How the original concept evolved to use HSS to improve cost efficiency, transportation, crane access and erection.
  • How HSS geometry supported the architectural form while simplifying fabrication and installation steps.
  • The benefits to the visitor and animal experience that were created through the unique construction of the structure, enabled by advanced steel.
