Capacity utilization among machinery manufacturers continues its rise

By Kristin Bartschi

Total U.S. industrial production increased in September 2026 to the highest level since December 2018.

Among machinery manufacturers, levels of production are increasing but not surpassing recent highs, and capacity utilization is at its highest level since November 2018.

“The unprecedented scale of manufacturing technology orders through August 2026 is a natural response to this heightened level of capacity utilization,” said Christopher Chidzik, principal economist of AMT – The Association For Manufacturing Technology.

“As capacity utilization rates rise, additional machinery will be needed to address demand without extending lead times. Keeping up with this demand while controlling backlogs will become the challenge for the builders of manufacturing technology in the coming months.”
