Industrial Supply: What are the 1–3 biggest trends in warehouse robotics and automation today, and what’s driving them?
Turner:
1. Companies are realizing they need to automate material handling, but they may not be able to automate everything at once. Many customers want to automate entire workflows such as picking inventory out of racking to loading trucks, but there is no single technology that fits every warehouse application today. As a result, businesses are taking a phased approach, starting with simpler, proven processes and building from there. The focus is on creating a roadmap that delivers immediate operational value while laying the foundation for broader automation in the future.
2. Interoperability and VDA 5050 are becoming major priorities in warehouse automation. VDA 5050 is an emerging industry standard that allows multi-brand fleets of mobile robots to operate through a third-party fleet management system. Companies are increasingly recognizing that future warehouse operations will likely involve multiple automation providers, making compatibility and flexibility critical when selecting suppliers. Businesses want solutions that can integrate seamlessly into evolving warehouse ecosystems rather than locking them into a single vendor platform.
3. Flexible financing and leasing models are also driving adoption of warehouse automation. More companies are exploring automation systems with financing options that reduce upfront capital investment and make adoption more accessible. Similar to how many businesses finance forklifts and other material handling equipment, autonomous mobile robot (AMR) solutions are increasingly being offered through leasing or structured financing programs, helping organizations scale automation while managing costs more effectively.
IS: What do you recommend distributors should think about and investigate before investing in robotics/automation for their warehouse operations?
Turner: Facilities considering robotics and warehouse automation should take a step back and evaluate the full operational picture before making an investment. That means understanding their workflow challenges, defining long-term automation goals, and identifying how autonomous mobile robots (AMRs) will integrate with existing systems, equipment, and processes. It’s also important to assess the flexibility, reliability, and ease of use of both the hardware and software to ensure the solution can scale with future operational demands.
Beyond the technology itself, companies should carefully evaluate the supplier and support structure behind the solution. Strong service teams, available spare parts, system integration expertise, and employee training all play a critical role in successful deployment and long-term ownership. Investing in automation is about building a sustainable solution that employees can operate, maintain, and grow with over time.
IS: Please describe 1 new and/or innovative product/technology your company has recently released. What are its highlights?
Turner: KUKA has introduced the KMP 250P, a compact autonomous mobile robot (AMR) built for intralogistics and smart manufacturing applications. Designed to transport loads up to 250 kilograms, the platform integrates seamlessly with KUKA’s broader AMR ecosystem, enabling efficient coordination and management of multiple mobile robots through KUKA.AMR Fleet software. Its modular design also allows compatibility with existing chargers and accessories across KUKA’s mobile robot lineup.
The KMP 250P features advanced safety technology, including 360-degree obstacle detection through laser scanners and 3D cameras, enabling safe autonomous navigation in dynamic environments. KUKA also added an energy-saving sleep mode to improve fleet efficiency. The mobile platform is available in cleanroom and ESD versions for electronics and semiconductor industries.
