Manufacturing and mining employment decline
Manufacturing employment decreased by 12,000 jobs in December, while the mining industry lost 8,000 jobs.
Manufacturing employment grew by 46,000 jobs in 2019, after gaining 264,000 jobs in 2018.
In 2019, employment in mining declined by 24,000, after rising by 63,000 in 2018.
The construction industry added 20,000 jobs in December. Employment in the industry rose by 151,000 in 2019, about half of the 2018 gain of 307,000.
Total nonfarm payroll employment rose by 145,000 in December, and the unemployment rate was unchanged at 3.5 percent.
