Factory jobs declined in Sept., construction showed small gain
Manufacturing lost 2,000 jobs during the month of September, while the construction industry added 7,000 jobs.
The decline in factory jobs resulted from a loss of 4,000 jobs in durable goods manufacturing, offset by a gain of 2,000 in nondurable goods.
Motor vehicles and parts saw 4,100 lost jobs, while computer and electronic products gained 3,800 jobs.
The unemployment rate declined to 3.5 percent in September, and total nonfarm payroll employment rose by 136,000, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported.
