Convert great interns into hires — and stay connected with the ones you can’t

The best internship programs aren’t measured by how they end but by what happens next.

Stay connected devices

Letting a strong intern simply walk out the door is a missed opportunity. If you’ve done the work of recruiting, onboarding, and developing an intern over the course of a summer or semester, you’ve already made an investment. The smartest thing you can do is protect it.

The question to keep in mind from day one: Could this person have a future here?

When the timing is right, make the offer.

If a standout intern is ready to join your organization full-time — and you have a role that fits — don’t wait. Extend an offer before they start exploring others. Interns who convert to full-time hires onboard faster, integrate into the company culture more smoothly, and tend to stay longer than external hires. They already know your systems, your people, and your pace of operations.

When it’s not the right time, stay in the picture.

Sometimes the fit is there, but the timing isn’t — the intern has a year of school left, the headcount isn’t open, or the right role doesn’t exist yet. That’s not the end of the relationship; it’s a pause. Interns you stay connected with become a warm talent pipeline you can activate when the moment is right. They also become ambassadors for your employer brand, referring classmates and colleagues your way and representing your organization positively on campus.

A few simple ways to stay connected:

  • Add them to an alumni-style email list with occasional industry insights or company updates
  • Connect on LinkedIn and engage meaningfully with their posts
  • Invite them back for a facility tour, hiring event, or industry day
  • Share industry learning opportunities, webinars, or relevant content
  • Check in around graduation with a genuine conversation about what they're exploring

The distribution industry runs on relationships. Your internship program should, too.

Industry Perspective

“When we started our internship program in 2025, it was a great opportunity to bring in entry-level workers straight out of high school," said Jessica Jordan, human resources business partner, Infinite Electronics Inc. "We ended up selecting six local students who were so impactful in their work and the perspective they brought to the organization. Our great experience with the internship program led us to start an entire early career engagement and development program this year.”

In the Field: Stories & Examples from Distributors

The last Thursday in July is International Intern Day — a built-in opportunity to celebrate the people who've contributed to your organization while putting your internship program in front of students who are watching and deciding where to apply next.
