Great work deserves more than a honk and a wave

Everyone appreciates being recognized, but how we recognize others can make all the difference. While a simple “Great job!” is always welcome, taking a moment to explain why someone’s contribution mattered makes the recognition more meaningful and memorable.

Recognition has the greatest impact when it’s specific, sincere, and timely.

When recognizing a colleague, keep these three principles in mind:

  1. Be specific. Instead of saying, “Thanks for your hard work," describe exactly what the person did and why it mattered. For example: “Thank you for working with purchasing to find an alternate product when inventory was low. Your proactive communication helped us keep the customer’s project moving without delay.”
  2. Be timely. Recognition has the greatest impact when it’s given soon after the achievement. Acknowledging someone’s efforts in the moment reinforces positive behaviors and lets employees know their contributions are noticed.
  3. Be genuine. Recognition doesn't have to be elaborate or formal. A sincere thank-you during a meeting, a handwritten note, or a quick Teams message can have a lasting impact when it’s authentic.

Meaningful recognition strengthens relationships, reinforces positive behaviors, and helps create a workplace where people feel valued and motivated to do their best.

As you go through your week, think about someone who has made your job a little easier or helped a customer, teammate, or project succeed. Let them know by sharing:

  • What they did.
  • Why it mattered.
  • The positive impact it had on you, your team, or the customer.

A few thoughtful words can go a long way in building a culture where appreciation is part of our everyday work.

“We attack?recognition?from a couple different points. For peer-to-peer?recognition we use a platform called Bucket List," said Jessica Jordan, human resources business partner, Infinite Electronics, Inc. "You accrue points, and then you can buy stuff from Amazon with your points. It looks like a social media feed, so anytime anybody gets points, anybody in the company can see it along with the?recognition. You can like it, you can add your own comments, you can add points to that person. So, it’s a really good way to publicly recognize employees.”
