July manufacturing orders down, but reshoring helps fill gap
New orders of manufacturing technology totaled $353.9 million in July 2023, according to the latest U.S. Manufacturing Technology Orders Report published by AMT – The Association For Manufacturing Technology. Reporting on September 11, AMT said July orders declined 12.4% from June 2023 but were only 10.5% lower than July 2022. Year-to-date orders reached $2.83 billion, 12.7% lower than this point last year.

Q2 manufacturing dips
The U.S. Census Bureau reported Q2 U.S. manufacturing corporations' seasonally adjusted after-tax profits in the second quarter of 2023 totaled $206.1 billion, down $21.8 (±0.6) billion from the after-tax profits of $227.9 billion recorded in the first quarter of 2023, and down $64.3 (±1.3) billion from the after-tax profits of $270.4 billion recorded in the second quarter of 2022.

July construction spending rises 5.5% YOY
The U.S. Census Bureau reports construction spending during July 2023 was estimated at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of $1,972.6 billion, 0.7% (±0.5%) above the revised June estimate of $1,958.9 billion. The July figure is 5.5% (±1.2%) above the July 2022 estimate of $1,869.3 billion.
Fastenal reports 3.6% sales increase
